WEST MIDLAND REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022

30th April - 2nd May & 7th-8th May

Alan Higgs Centre, Coventry

After a two year absence due to covid, the West Midland Regional Championships made a return to the swimming calendar.  And with the competition missed in 2020 & 2021 it seemed all the top clubs and swimmers in the region were in attendance.

The competition was held over five long days over two weekends.  Despite being very busy, very hot and very tiring, Wrekin team raised their game and came away with lots of fantastic results.  The squad achieved many long course Personal Best times, qualified for lots of finals, and plenty of medals were won.

Out of the nineteen swimmers competing, fifteen placed in the top eight of their races, with seven of the team winning medals and top place golds going to Eve Leleux, Oliver Greaves and Beth Barrett.

This year we also had relay teams competing in the 16&under and 17&over Boys and for the first time ever Wrekin had a 16&under Girls team competing.

The 16&under boys, Robert Melintescu, Oliver Greaves, Leon Steer & Joe Herring, took a brilliant bronze place in the 4 x 100m Free relay and not to be outdone the 17&over boys, Will Timmins, Will Slawson, Mason Carter, Joe Ritson, went one better and achieved silver in the 4 x 200m Free relay.

The girls 16&under team, Ella Justice, Christie Morrow, Lola Wheeler and Beth Barrett, gained some valuable experience competing in the relays and manged to finish in the top eight of their 4 x 100m Free event.

Some great swimming from all the team across five very busy days, well done to all.  Now time to knuckle down to training ready for British and Summer Nationals, with some race practice due at Wolverhampton open and Summer Counties along the way.

BRITISH SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 - 5th - 10th April

Ponds Forge, Sheffield

Please click here for full results

This competition is one of the main British Swimming events of the year.  With top elite swimmer's from Britain competing for selection for several International meets, including the Commonwealth Games.

Wrekin had two swimmers qualify for this event Eve Leleux and Lola Wheeler.  Unfortunately, along with many other swimmers, Lola was declined her entry into the competition due to her event having limited heats.

So it was all down to Eve to fly the Wrekin flag.  Having qualified for four events over four different days it was going to be a long week in Sheffield for her.  Eve put in some solid performances, with all her swims being around her long course PB's and managed to improve her event rankings in all four swims.

Next event is the West Midlands Championships, starting Friday 29th April.

DERVENTIO EXCEL APRIL MEET - 1st - 3rd APRIL 2022

Ponds Forge, Sheffield

This was Wrekin's first targeted long course open meet in preparation for the upcoming West Midlands Championships and for some swimmers a chance to get themselves on to the Summer National Long Course rankings.

Over the three days of competition Wrekin swimmers produced some fantastic racing with plenty of LC Personal Best's achieved.  Even though its early days yet, some of our swimmers have achieved times to be on the ranking list for Summer British Champs and English National Champs in July and August.

Summer Competitions rankings

Our younger members of the squad were also in attendance this weekend.  Sam Good had some hard races against competitors who were a lot faster than him, but he stayed focussed on his own swims and achieved some great PB's.  Libby Coss competed in her first long course competition, swimming just one event,  Not only did she gain the experience of competing in a 50m pool but also achieved a great PB in the process.

Huge well done to all the team who competed, we look forward to West Mids Champs starting the end of April.
